It's summer so let's moisturize in a smart way!

As we enter into summer there is no doubt that skincare is a topic on a lot of people’s minds. Higher temperatures and warmer months mean vacations, trips to the beach, and endless hours in the sun. All these activities lead people to layer on their sunscreen to protect their skin from UV rays; fighting against sunburns and any potential skin damage. Now, while this is important, there is a very commonly overlooked step and process in one's skincare routine during the summer. That step is to moisturize and hydrate. The constant heat can lead to extremely dehydrated skin which is why moisturizing and hydrating should never be overlooked, especially during the summer months. Here at Arboretum Skincare, we care for all skin types and we strive to help people reach healthy glowing skin all year round.

Why It Is Important To Moisturize:

Alright everyone, let’s talk about the importance of moisturizing our skin.  Moisturizing and hydrating is a key aspect of any skincare routine. What is the difference between hydrating and moisturizing? Hydrators bind water to the skin and every type of skin needs it! Serums with Hyaluronic acid are perfect hydrators. Moisturizers lock in moisture, reducing water loss and enhancing skin’s barrier function. Plant oils, shea butter, and phospholipids are examples of great moisturizers. Using products that contain both hydrating and moisturizing ingredients and lack emulsifiers is very beneficial for the skin!

Why is using moisturizers with lots of emulsifiers harmful for the skin? Few reasons:

-Many emulsifiers contain Ethoxylated Ingredients. This is from the Credo’s “dirty list of harmful ingredients:

“Ethoxylated Ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a carcinogen. To avoid Ethoxylated compounds look for these common ingredients listed on labels (although many more exist too): • Ceteareth-20, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, and most ingredients ending in “-eth” • Emulsifying wax: This is usually a blend of Cetearyl Alcohol and Polysorbate 60 or Ceteareth-20 • PEGS: (Polyethylene Glycol) compounds. “

-Another reason to avoid skincare with emulsifiers: emulsifiers can stay in your skin longer after you stop using a moisturizer, and every time you wash your face or take a shower they help natural oils from your skin escape, compromising your natural skincare barrier and increasing water loss.

While we offer many products at Arboretum to assist one's skin through the sunny summer days, one product stands out amongst the rest. The Hydrating Liposomal Emulsion is an emulsifier-free product that will ensure deep luxurious hydration to the skin. The lightweight botanical-enriched moisture lotion helps get and keep skin soft and hydrated, even during the most extreme summer heat. The all-natural formula works to keep your skin looking its best while also minimizing pore size. This is an important point to note because, during the summer, our skin can become oily as our sebaceous glands begin to work more and produce more oil compared to normal. This can then cause the pores on our face to increase in size making them more noticeable than average. Now this lotion can be used in two ways, either on its own as a light moisturizer or as an extra layer under a night cream. Adding this lotion into your daily routine will help your skin stay soft and supple and will help diminish abnormally large pores.

Ingredient Breakdown:

Now that we have a better understanding of why it is so important to moisturize, let's break down some of the Hydrating Emulsion ingredients. The key ingredient that truly contributes to the overall success of the Hydrating Emulsion is the liposomes, produced from soy phospholipids. Olga Goldberger, the creator of Arboretum Skincare, worked for many years as a molecular biologist/lab manager at the labs of Harvard Medical School. Throughout those years and lots of experimentation in her own skin lab, Goldberger grasped a good understanding of how our skin works on a much deeper level. The phospholipids included in the lotion form liposomes during the production process and they really can enhance a barrier in the skin's cellular membrane in order to protect the cell itself. Along with these liposomes, there are a few extracts included that provide different benefits for the skin. Hibiscus and Ginkgo Biloba extracts provide anti-aging and antioxidant properties. Ginkgo Biloba is a  very underrated ingredient that helps once again with anti-aging, skin hydration, skin-soothing, and potent antioxidant protection. Hyaluronic acid here provides the best hydration and meadowfoam seed oil and phospholipids together provide a great moisturizing effect.

All in all, Arboretum wants you to enjoy your summer, just please remember to moisturize your skin when done. The Hydrating Emulsion provides your skin with all the necessary hydration it could need and will also keep your skin looking smooth and young. So, when you grab your beach bag or are packing for that long overdue vacation don’t only grab your sunscreen, grab your moisturizer (without emulsifiers!)  and say hello to smooth, hydrated skin all summer long.
