Facial Skin: The Importance of Identifying Which Type of Skin You Have
With skincare, it is not a one size fits all type of solution. In order to take the proper care of your skin it is important for you to identify what type of skin you actually have. Every individual is different and by taking the time to understand your specific skin type’s needs it will make managing your skin that much easier. Below we have categorized the common types of skin.
Take a moment to review and see which type you identify with.
Combination:
Dryness and oil spells can be found in different areas of this skin type. It is common to feature dry skin on the cheeks and have a more oily appearance in areas such as the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin). This type of skin is one of the more common types among the different categories. Pores can appear large and the more oiler parts of the skin can look shiny. A lot of times the weather has a direct effect on this skin type. In the colder months the skin could appear drier. In the hotter months the skin could seem a lot more oily. A smart way to manage this skin type is to maintain two separate skin care routines. Products that generally work on dry skin might be too strong or harsh for the more oiler parts of the skin. Specifically, create a separate process for the T-zone than the rest of your face
Dry Skin
This skin type suffers from a lot of itchiness, sensitivity and flakiness since it isn’t producing enough oil itself. Sometimes the skin might even crack due to the severity of dryness. Dry skin gives the appearance of looking very dull because it is often covered in layers of dead skin cells. These occurrences are due to many reasons such as the environment, climate and lifestyle habits. Dry weather and using hot water are some of the common reasons dryness appears. Unfortunately, as we age our skin naturally gets drier due to the change in hormones. A quick remedy for battling dry skin is to drink a lot of water daily. The hydration will make a big difference in how your skin looks and feels.
Normal Skin
When we say normal, we mean that this skin type is well-balanced. It is not too oily or too dry. Common features of normal skin are barely visible pores, good circulation, a radiant complexion and few blemishes. This type responds well to multiple different soaps, makeup and other products without irritation or redness. People with this skin type rarely feel like their skin is greasy and barely see breakouts. Even though this skin type seems low maintenance, it is still very important to stay hydrated and follow a basic skincare routine. Some additional suggestions to maintain clear skin is to moisturize, religiously wear sunscreen and always remove your makeup before going to bed for the night.
Oily Skin
This type of skin seems to always shine due to an excessive amount of oil being produced. The over production causes the pores to become clogged very easily and dead cells might start to accumulate. The pores in this skin type are visually larger, especially around the forehead, nose and chin. This causes more outbreaks of pimples, blackheads and other blemishes. However, oily skin tends to have the most moisture which helps battle the onset of any wrinkles. An easy way to battle excessive oil is to wash your face twice per day. This will remove the dirt and bacteria that may be clogging the pores. However, it is important to not over wash your face. Doing things could actually remove necessary oils needed for your skin.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin can be both oily or dry or normal. It is more prone to inflammation, redness, scaling. It can reactive after using a skin care product with fragrances or emulsifiers. That's why Arboretum Skincare doesn't have emulsifiers, fragrances, parabens, mineral oil, PEGs or amines.
